Hemorrhoidectomy

Hemorrhoidectomy

A hemorrhoidectomy is a surgical procedure to remove hemorrhoids. Hemorrhoids are swollen veins in the lower rectum or anus, similar to varicose veins. They can be internal (inside the rectum) or external (under the skin around the anus). When hemorrhoids become too large, painful, or don’t improve with other treatments, a doctor may recommend a hemorrhoidectomy to remove them.

Symptoms of Hemorrhoids

You might need a hemorrhoidectomy if you experience:

Pain or discomfort: Especially when sitting or during bowel movements.

Itching or irritation: Around the anal area.

Swelling or lumps: Near the anus.

Bleeding: Bright red blood during bowel movements.

Prolapse: Hemorrhoids that push outside the anus and can’t be pushed back in.

If these symptoms are severe or don’t go away with creams, diet changes, or other non-surgical treatments, surgery might be the next step.

When Should You Visit a Surgeon?

You should see a surgeon if:

Home treatments don’t work: Over-the-counter creams, sitz baths, or fiber supplements haven’t helped.

Pain is severe: Hemorrhoids are causing constant pain or affecting your daily life.

Bleeding is frequent: You notice regular bleeding during bowel movements.

Prolapsed hemorrhoids: Hemorrhoids are sticking out and can’t be pushed back in.

Recurring hemorrhoids: They keep coming back despite treatment.

Why is it Important to See a Surgeon?

Seeing a surgeon is important because:

Accurate Diagnosis: A surgeon can confirm if your symptoms are due to hemorrhoids or another condition (like fissures, abscesses, or even colorectal cancer).

Prevent Complications: Untreated hemorrhoids can lead to complications like anemia (from blood loss), strangulated hemorrhoids (loss of blood flow to the tissue), or infections.
Effective Treatment: A surgeon can recommend the best treatment, whether it’s minimally invasive (like rubber band ligation) or a full hemorrhoidectomy.

Long-Term Relief: Surgery can provide a permanent solution for severe hemorrhoids, improving your quality of life.

What Happens During a Hemorrhoidectomy?

During the procedure:
• You’ll be given anesthesia (local, spinal, or general) so you don’t feel pain.
• The surgeon removes the swollen hemorrhoid tissue using special tools.
• The area is left to heal on its own, depending on the technique used.

Recovery can take 2-4 weeks, and you may experience some pain, If it is done by open method. But in laser haemorrhoidectomy patients suffer minimal or no pain and also have early recovery.
